40-man roster set

The Astros set their 40-man roster Tuesday. I thought they may add a few more players than they did. Apparently, Ed Wade, et. al have quite a few free agents additions, trades, and perhaps even Rule V draftees in their future plans. That said, the three players added: Chad Reineke, Brad James, and Sammy Gervacio were 1,2, and 5 in my predictions. They were also the top three pitchers on my list. Pitching is definitely the most important to protect if you've got it. Also, not surprisingly Jimmy Barthmaier was released. As it stands now, the roster is at 34 players.

the biggest pro of all of them is youth... Sapp(20), Einertson(22), and Ramirez(23) as of opening day 2008. The big question about Sapp going in was catching ability. He had a good stick in H.S., but hasn't shown it in 1.5 pro years. Ramirez has big league defense, one article described him with a cannon arm. The question his hitting. Einertson seems to be all-around solid, but the question if he is extra-special in any one area, speed, defense, power to make an impact.

My first impression of Ed Wade is at least he is going to do SOMETHING. I always got the feeling Purpura was too close to the players, especially the guys who came up through the system under him. Further, any time I heard him speak, he sounded dazed and confused. Not that public speaking is the end all of being a general manager. At the same time, it wasn't difficult to hear Purpura speak and imagine him being outsmarted. Anyhow, Wade did do some good things in Philly, and has made some moves to improve the farm system. Esepcially hirings in the scouting area.
Objectively, I think the Astros will improve, but it will take awhile. As a fan, I hope Mr. McClane is patient enough to wait for good inside-out improvement. It's more fun to be a fan of a team that seems to be going somewhere in my opinion.
