As I write this post, the Astros' Gulf Coast League entry is on the field in Kissimmee playing its final game of the 2011 season. Many of the players on the team are likely returning to Kissimmee in a few weeks for the Fall Instructional League, which begins in mid-September.
A few GCL Astros to make note of for future reference:
Chris Epps, 22, OF. Epps was drafted in the 45th Round out of Clemson in June. He was 34 for 112 with three doubles, three triples, four home runs, 25 RBI and six stolen bases in 35 Gulf Coast League games before being promoted to Tri-City.
Blake Ford, 23, RHP. Ford leads the GCL team with eight saves. He has posted a 1.99 ERA in 17 appearances. The 45th Round Draft pick has 20 strikeouts in 22 2/3 IP.
Evan Grills, 19, LHP. Grills was drafted in 2010 (10th Round). He has made 13 appearances this summer, posting a 3.00 ERA and striking out 29 in 33 innings.
Luca Martone, 18, IF. Martone, from Italy, is in his second season with the GCL Astros. His bat has woken up in August. Heading in to today's game, he was batting .299 over-all. In 13 August games, Martone is 13 for 33. In today's game, he has a double and a single through six innings.
Yonathan Mejia, 18, IF. 2011 is Mejia's first season in the United States. He is batting .329 with eight doubles and 25 RBI.
