It took until the last month of his second season with the GCL Astros, but Italian native Luca Martone is finally stringing some hits together. The 18-year old infielder from Anzio, Italy went two for four in Saturday's contest to raise his average for the season to .283. He has three doubles, two RBI and two stolen bases.
Martone entered August with a .204 average, which was better than his 2010 average of .173 in 52 at bats. Despite the improvement, Martone was still too close to the Mendozini Line for him to be more than a blip in a GCL Astros box score. However, with less than a week to go in the season, Martone has gone 10 for 26 in his 11 August games and left the .200 in his rearview mirror for the time being. The Gulf Coast League season wraps up Friday, August 26.
