Team USA needed a strong outing from Andy Van Hekken Monday afternoon in Panama, and they got it. Van Hekken allowed five singles and no runs in eight innings facing only three batters over the minimum as Team USA knocked off host Panama at Rod Carew Stadium 5-0. The victory allowed Team USA to advance to the second round of the Baseball World Cup. They will next face Cuba Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.(Minute Maid Park time)
Van Hekken picked up two of Team USA's four victories in the first round of the competition. In his two starts, he has allowed nine hits and only one run in 14 innings. Assuming four days' rest, he could pitch again in the final day of the tournament Saturday.
