Austin Kubitza 6'5/205” RHP
Rice University
DOB- 11/16/1991
Kubitza shared some draft day honors with fellow Rice commit
Jameson Taillon when he was selected by the Pirates in the seventh round of the
2010 draft. Unlike Taillon however Kubitza
elected to take his talent to Rice and has been the team’s ace since last year.
Featuring a sinker/slider combo Kubitza uses a 3/4 arm slot
and cross body delivery to induce weak contact.
His FB sits in the 89-92 range, ramping up as high as 95. Kubitza’s slider can also serve as a power
curve, and serves as a strike out pitch.
Austin has been
working on a change-up that is showing plus potential and offers him a 3rd
option. The big knock on Austin
is that his cross body delivery tends to disrupt with his command. He has been impressive in both his freshman
and sophomore years, winning Conference USA Freshman of the Year. His frame gives him the chance to be an
inning eater who induces lots of groundballs.
While I don't see him coming off the board in the first round,
I can see Kubitza being a really good second round pick up for any team.
