Kohl Stewart 6'3”/190 RHP
St. Pius X HS (TX). Committed to Texas
A&M as a QB
DOB-10/07/1994
Kohl Stewart could be this years Lance McCullers, Jr.
As of right now, Stewart is considered the top prep pitcher
in the draft. He has a low 90's FB that
has some good sinking action to it and can get up to 96. His slider shows potential to be an out
pitch, but it can get slurvy from time to time.
Stewart has a lot of projection due to his elite
athleticism. He also features a change
up that could be a plus pitch.
Now, let’s get into why Stewart is such an interesting case. First, t he is committed to A&M to play
QB for the Aggies. If Johnny Football
decides to go pro after next year then Kohl could be a starter in College
Station by the fall of 2014. Next, he is a type 1 diabetic. While this isn't a huge issue, learning to
adjust to the diabetic lifestyle takes time.
Consider having to learn the life of a minor leaguer while having to
deal with diabetes at the same time. The
third issue is that Stewart has apparently suffered a forearm strain that will
keep him from throwing until March.
With those three issues to consider, there is a chance Stewart
could slip out of the first round. Teams
could get creative and try to pry him from his college career, but it might take
a large sum of cash. While he isn't on
the same level as Bundy or Giolito (the past top prep RHPs), Stewart is very
worthy of being a first rounder. His
command isn't the greatest, but that is a problem that most prep pitchers
face.
It's said that he is more of a thrower than a pitcher, but
with his amazing athletic ability and plus FB he has good projection. I was shocked when McCullers fell to the
supplemental round, but I think I will be less surprised if Stewart falls. Only time will tell.
