I received another newsletter "Readings from the Book of Bo" from the Church of Baseball-Decision Scientists' Synod Wednesday morning.
One of the highlights was a special invitation to attend services on Sunday, September 1. According to the newsletter, September 1 has not fallen on Sunday since 2002, so the congregation is planning a special celebration of the momentous occasion.
In addition, readers of the newsletter are encouraged to attend a new class being offered by the COB(DSS)- Did the Luhnow really Lose a Trade? - Debunking the Myths and Half-Truths and Outright Lies. The sabremetrics-based course meets for the next four weeks and includes a free CD-ROM. Participants are asked to bring their own laptops.
The centerpiece of the newsletter is of course the "Reading from the Book of Bo". I have shared this week's installment below.
"Late in the year 2012, the Luhnow said to Bo Porter, "Arise, go to Minute Maid."
But Bo ran away and headed for Yokohama.
During his journey, a great storm came up that threatened to capsize the ship.
Porter said, "Throw me into the sea, and this storm will calm."
Once Porter was in the sea, a great fish was sent to swallow him.
After three days in the belly of the fish, Porter called out admitting the error of his ways. "I was mistaken to run from the Astros Way. Hear my song of thanksgiving. I vow I will make good."
The fish vomited Porter out onto dry land.
Porter awoke to find himself on the banks of Buffalo Bayou near Allen's Landing. He staggered to his feet and made his way to Minute Maid Park, where the Luhnow waited expectantly."
